The word "Acro-polis" means city by the edge. Towering over the capital, the Acropolis truly is an impressive sight and draws tourists from all around the world to witness the greatness of the ancient Greeks. <br>
Within the Acropolis, the Parthenon, dedicated by the Athenians to Athena Parthenos, the patron of their city, is the most magnificent creation of the Athenian democracy at the height of its power. It is also the finest monument on the Acropolis in terms of both conception and execution. Built between 447 and 438 BC, as part of the great Periklean building project, it begun after the victory at the battle of Marathon. The Parthenon was designed by the architects Iktinos and Kallikrates, while the sculptor Pheidias supervised the entire building program and conceived the temple&#39;s sculptural decoration and the chryselephantine statue of Athena. You will also have the opportunity to admire other important monuments such as Propylae, Temple of Athena Nike, Parthenon, Erechtheion with its Porch of Maidens.


Acropolis

Explore the rich and fascinating history of the Acropolis from the Bronze Age to Roman Greece. On the main level, the visitors can see extended remnants of the ancient city, as well as significant findings deriving from the slopes of the Acropolis. On the first level, there are finds from the Acropolis during the Mycenaeic and Geometric era. These include the temple of Athena Nike and Erechtheion, as well as works dating from the late ancient period to the early Christian years.

On the second level you can find the restaurant, the Museum’s shop and bookstore, balconies with the view of the exhibits. Finally, on the third floor, the frieze, the metopes and the temple’s pediments, are displayed. The famous marble frieze is recreated with both original marbles and casts of those pieces held elsewhere, such as the Elgin Marbles in the British Museum.

This half day tour will take you to some of the most important religious sites of Athens. You will begin by departing from Corinth via Iera Odos (the Sacred Way), named so because it was the route taken by a procession celebrating the Eleusinian Mysteries, where initiations held every year for the cult of Demeter and Persephone based at Eleusis in ancient Greece. 

Your first stop will be the Monastery of Daphni, an 11th-century Byzantine monastery listed as a World Heritage site together with Monasteries Hosios Loukas and Nea Moni of Chios. The interior of the church is decorated with superb mosaics, a unique, fine example of the Classical idealism of Middle Byzantine art. The crowded scenes of the mosaics narrate scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin. 

Driving along the coastal road, you will then stop for a short photo stop at Corinth canal, which merges the Aegean with the Ionian Sea. Shortly thereafter you will reach the ancient town of Corinth, where St. Paul lived and preached for two years (Acts 18:1-18). Visit the ruins of the ancient city where Paul worked with Aquila and Priscilla, see the remains of the first century shops, the Agora where Paul’s trial by Gallio took place, the Fountain of Peirene, and one of the most outstanding monuments of pre –Roman period, the temple of Apollo.
